DEAD OR ALIVE?
Ephesians 2:1-10 New American Standard Bible - NASB 1995 (NASB1995) And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.

As you begin your journey into the “mission” land, think of your Lord,
Our Jesus took his experience of suffering and lessons. I asked myself,
how will the Lord use me today. Will I be an eye witness and attest to
what I truly see, here, feel taste or touch.
When I started my actual mission I was already in the field being offered
rides and food by church people.

I can’t tell you what you already know about me
• I was raised in the Seventh-day Adventist
church environment, 14 years in S.D.A.
Schools.
• There is no purpose of omission in these
commentary pages, for you will find further
down the line a willingness to complete more
editions and books if the Lord permits, so
let’s get on with what I have accumulated in
information for This edition and thank you for
your patience.
• 36
Commentary pages
• Surely this cannot be enough “is that all you want…” “will this
help…” were the comments.
• To see the picture more clearly you must understand your own
harvest by those you see everyday. Then attest to those needs as
you relate to your own sacrifice, suffering , willingness, or simply
of what have you.
• A cup of cold water is offered and a blessing is received. But I
should not have to tell you go look for a sweaty person dripping
with perspiration and ask them if they need water, either to drink
or to bathe.
• I was walking in the middle of the night in Los Vegas in the 80’s I
had no place to stay and I sat in the lounge of a help agency and
woke up sometime the next day. I had walked through the Mohave
desert, because the *ticket office in “Needles”, Ca., would not sell
me a ticket. And that was dearly all I had to get to the next point.
What is worse the scanty details in which I describe my story are
not fitting for those who crave the colors and nuances of picturing
me wandering a long 18 mile walk that is nothing to figure
without an vivid imagination.
• If someone would have guessed my need and been a missionary,
what a difference that would have made! As it turns out the
Adventists helped me there and I went on my way to home.
• Questions loom up, what were you doing there and why didn’t you
plan.
• That valid question will come up in other books, at this point the
missionary people find themselves in situations sudden and
inconvenient, to the rest of society, (especially by the spirit of God),
that are beyond the specific points of questions preparation for
that, or for a final crisis.
• * This is omitted for other stories to come, see also syllabus offered
• “The indigent”, sold separately© all rights reserved.
• 37
Commentary
• The journey gets long for the traveler who is confronted with
hunger , bathing needs and necessities.
• Confusion sets in as I/ they, try to settle down to their
circumstances (“the poor, poor dear!”)
• My father( A NOTED LICENSED COSMOTOLOGIST) would say:
compassionately, “I don’t know how you do it” he had seen me
through the years, though he held no bias to specific constraints I
held he looked kindly on..
• You see I have read God’s testimony that a women returns to her
father’s home and has right to bread, (this I did not know was
available to me through scripture until way past adult living).
• But I did not want to be on my parents and begging , yet with
talent, skills and education, I could not find a way from this place
I was positioned, ( be it tribulation, or trial of my own making
),also came to mind.
• Further directions?
• Directions are the factor that ads and subtracts revolting
developments, these developments are a careful mix of more public
more strangers, and more distance.
• Think of Hagar, she had no one to ask in her trip in the desert, she
sought God and God alone.
• I look in retrospect nearly twenty years ago a suit case thrown on
the ground and I met no one to whom it belonged. I had no clothes
and these fit perfectly, I wouldn’t suggest such a thing! How came
this to happen God certainly knew I had nothing and no one was
helping me, later I asked the police about situations such as these
and they assured me not to worry, since it was out there
unclaimed.
• Occasionally I would stop by the conference office and Elder Paytee
would help me.
• How does one make missionary? It doesn’t simply circumstance
you will see unfold into the life I found in the travel, and by no
means suggest that all or any other would choose this course,
Should you wish to become one there are plenty of other
opportunities.
• 38
Commentary, Yes I was looking for the love I believed was there!
• God pitied me, all the way through! I had no one , I couldn’t call, I
had no money, I was stuck, I assert that dangerously poor and
subject to subversion at all levels, thus tripled with fear, though I
knew my own self survey was helpful in prayer.
• When I Pasadena California many miles traveled from the Los
Vegas experience.
• The connection of weekend church solo work singing hoping for
leads for work, but dynamics of poverty (for a woman whose
station was an executive’s wife) left questions in my mind, of the
sanity of others, for in the same breath of their rejecting me, they
did not ask themselves why would I turn out a talented skilled
person as nothing to offer, or as, going no where?
• Questions of the end of time had entered my mind, but the
relevancy of my deeds was more real than what was ahead in
terms of God’s return.
• My heart would cry out, I have talents, I could be put to usefulness,
not out here in the King’s highway, I would pray “I don’t know , I
am puzzled…” frozen without prayers and hopes, sometimes
couldn’t pray or hope, the reality set in.
• How this is going to help you, I don’t know, it might prevent you
from taking a unadvised turn in your life.
• As I stayed longer in the streets it became apparent to me, I was
being given a permanent “let-go” from society, though I had been
employed in status areas of employment, what could I now use of
my experience to help me live?
• Long before this guideline was written and circulated I was
fulltime agent of poverty.
• (*see guideline)
• Jesus would help me with the meet at church part, cause there are
wars going on(1986 to 2001), and as much as I would love to be
drafted (1985-2000)i.e. filling out a draft card., all I could do was
submit it and register as a non-commissioned officer.
• 39
Commentary how can you say your sins are forgiven
•
•
•
•
•
• What is the point of the story?
• Was Claudia a lost soul or always feeling lost?
• Or was she given up on , as you reflect on the book, the songs and
draw your own conclusions to
• What leads up to the missionary, the church upbringing, the
ordained life-style then apparent tribulation.( you can say it is self
imposed if nothing brought it on.)
• Was I to be a non-commissioned officer of my own fate
• Was I to be an officer of the church of my area-region with
difficulties or similarities
• In 1991 the army, navy, air-force and marines all met in the John
Carter report area after the shrine auditorium convention.
• I was asked to sing with the choice though I knew nothing about
the armory in Glendale.
• The search against hunger and for shelter stayed with me, I often
wondered about the passersby, the comments about why don’t you
work, coupled with , we will not hire you.
• I would go to the shelters and even sing at their request, but after
being buffeted, I lost interest in the tendency for constant
rudeness and decided I was better alone, just me and God, so I
stayed nearly twenty years off and on in the poor missions and
shelter voluntary status, aiding music programs on the weekends
Saturdays and Sundays,
• Weakened by time , distance, rejection, I stayed a lot in the church
steps area with a sleeping bag and clothes for the very next day.
• During the week I registered my mail to be received as “artist in
residence” at trinity Lutheran Church: God Bless Pastor Floyd
Lawson, who encouraged both my singing and my painting.
• 40
Commentary I asked to be anointed
• I asked to be anointed and the church anointed me.
• Paul Mickelson called me every week (for nine years of service) and
I took the two day a week assignment for nine years, first on
Sabbath and connecting music program Praise work, concerts and
recitals on Sundays, where meeting the benevolent society of
friends as John and Esther Govorchin and others in the joint choirs
, musicals and cantatas were performed. I would ask my children
to join me and they did come on “mother’s day” and we sang
together, though they had music programs at other churches, both
Hillary and Kahlara, sing well.
• Today I look to retirement and the fulfillment of music as I know
it, with all rights reserved since 1976 , the book , “Songs for
Souls”, the recital work is sporatic, the community music classes
are social every semester for concert times, while the adjoining
members in any area church is not a vigorous practice of most
difficult work the standard of music presented has a lot to do with
my personal contact through the constant years of church music,
• If you should call this gentile poverty, I think it is classified as
thus.
• Though I record my voice each year on cassette for personal data
music ability, growth and understanding of music and the church
each presentation… the medium and technology answers to the
shelf life and infrastructure of DVD’S and CD”S, since I came from
the cassette era in my radio ministry, I have not tried to change
the shelf life of my existence.
• 41
Commentary presentations
• Presentations…. And reference, the cassette seals off time used
from the seventies until the point of my death. at one point I
OFFERED nine thousand dollars to anyone needing ministry
money that has now dwindled down this year 2008 in giving and
food bank necessities as we see the shelter and disaster programs
mounting with urgent messages for help. Yes help the family, be
frugal and yes help others!

WHAT IS FIELD SERVICE, HEALING AS A DISCIPLE OF CHRIST?
ARE YOU NOTHING SPECIAL?
Just an instrument, a vessel of the Lord!
Now as to time and use, do you choose?:
Would you select: it is either you or another recipient to use the tools of the Lord.s healing, the words of
comfort and expressions of faith and command.
You will personally need to know the biblical steps, if not the specific order, no matter , but among
these will be done by the anointing of GOD.
*HANDS ON HEALING
In THAT= “ Anointing”, these pronouncements as to touching the recipient are from the bible
I refer to the KJV bible readings. I set no other version examples.
I encourage you to study to find them, (when you search for them, you are “…the workman, that needeth
not to be ashamed…”)
1. Lift them up,(THE RECIPIENT) taking them by the hand.
2 Stretch forth your hand.
3 Say “… be thou made clean” or Be made clean.
4 Strictly charge to tell or not to tell of certain healings, certain circumstances.
5 Show thyself to religious leaders, priests, ministers or rabbis.
6. Pronounce, “… thy sins be forgiven…”
7. Say, ”… arise take up thy bed and walk…”.
8. Can fast or lead a fast time.
9. Stand up in the midst where you are healed.
11. Cause them to testify of their healing.
12 Teach, write, publish what you know.
13. Say, “ TALITHA CUMI”. *
14. Affirm the power of God,, affirm the Word of God.
15. Instruct in living.
16. Can feed or lead to a meal,( where there are poor, they need to be led to the food).
17. Bless the Food, Bless the Communion Table.
18. Food Cleanliness and purged, by God, Body and personal Cleanliness, neatness and the practice of
no sloth, by example, is a daily vigil, constraints of moral behaviour coupled with the (Levitcal) samples
of .i.e., you want to be moral, you want to be pure.
Sloth= called “warps”. ( should be a trained person in sanitation, and diplomacy of action.
19., Faith actions, and moves, assurance action, show forth confidence in God and the word.
20. Pray often, laying on hands, as you go. (sometimes quietly unheard or announced).
21. Fingers in ears,(touched ears).
22. Spat, sputum in healing,(references, suggestions and experience, the Christ healing).
23. Touched tongue in healing.
24. In certain cases:
Tell no man, give no “sign” remember occurrences and miracles(stated above, which are not heard of
today.s healing are matters of faith healings by those ordained by God and the word.
HELP MY UNBELIEF, COMMAND DEAF AND DUMB SPIRIT, TAKE BY THEIR HAND AND LIFT
UP, DO NOT SCANDALIZE, STAND STILL,( IN QUIETUDE)
25. ”…Be of better comfort arise.” i.e.
26. Pronounce their, (the recipient.s faith), what type of faith.
27. Pronounce the seal of things, end of a chapter in someone.s life or work.

He has guided me
There is an appointed time to die, some do not think that illness is an indication
of God.s appointment for you to rest, this is also one of interpretation of God.s will in
our lives: consider then the meaning of your life and work and the
Completion of your tasks on earth, If they are solicited, volunteered or hired.
I am on the presidential prayer team
The interests that I have are multiple through the leadership role I must play in the
church and the community, the Lord calls us to the pulling down of strongholds, both in
fellowship of willingness and imposed.
For twenty-two years approximately I was homeless off and on status.
During that imposed time, I believed in what I was taught as a child, that people do
rescue you.
You are going to hell! Don.t they rescue you, don.t they rescue the perishing
before they go to hell, is not poverty perishing?
While I was still young enough and employable over forty, no one did rescue me,
to employment or home, I took the opportunity to turn indigent into useful missionary
work.
During the lengthy street fellowship in the Unity of the Holy Spirit, I spent my
time in visitation of many good people in this present world, whose charity I will not
forget.
There are those too, who were not the example of what I learned was a
charitable spirit, but rather just “oust” you or get you out of the way by whatever
means.
There was also the “pack of lies” gangs on the bus who would try to cause
trouble to any unsuspecting person, if particularly you had no designated home life.
All the while my dad faithfully watched the outcome of my life, and kept my
book so as I would have it to refer to and consequently when he died I decided to redo it
on the computer for finished quality.
The book of songs expresses what I feel is doctrinally accurate, not only then
when I first put it to pen but now it is on a firm spiritual experience.
I do believe that Jesus was born, in the flesh, of the Holy Spirit and those things
described in the book tell of the Father and the fruits of the spirit in Christianity, since
we no longer bear the penalty for sin, our sins are “Lost forever, by his Grace at the
Cross.
My appointed time, I believe has something to do with the purpose of my life in
Christ and a finished work, or duty, the usefulness of what I have in talents and skills ,
plus the assignment of them at his will( revealed) and my willingness, must be
harmoniously developed. 46

on the street and in convalescent
homes.

HE IS GUIDING ME
Jesus
He has guided me safely everyday. This is where I was guided.
The reason I can write the third edition in a missionary way is due to his
divine intervention and persuasion to yield a harvest of my work since the first
book was written, only of music, that time in 1976, and 1977.
I called you, from other people.s phones, having none of my own.
I wrote you many email letters.
I met you at the churches on Sabbath and Sunday always hoping for an
announcement or call for me to continue in my work of music, as I would often
sing a descant or solo or choir piece, just holding on desperately often quietly.
Paul Mickelson(“The World.s Finest Organist”)seemed to grasp my
sincerity and would call me to service every week for nine years, the last nine
years of his life I worked with him, all programs were recorded.
I prepared when no one responded , I worked on the entire anthology of
Schirmer.s music for sopranos, so that when people would call I would have
sacred work.s ready., this was of course as a student of classics, required
literature for recital productions.
I compiled all my recorded music performed at UCC services,(united
community church= the installation of John carter report was also my
installation address as Deacon and later as attending soloist, Ordained
Minister).
Paul Mickelson was my accompanist and Director. Prayer and endurance
in our perseverance, was the key.
Allen Andrews Pasadena City College and Russ Litchfield, Organist for
Trinity Lutheran Church, were my pianists in Concert Recital with Paul
Mickelson, for my Ordained Recital, 2001.
I met so many poor Americans, I could not understand this unless it was
totally by their choice, this poverty seemed so senseless to me, I being one of
them, knew mine was not by choice. The plausibility of raising money through
concerts died away due to lack of interest and cohesiveness. But the main works
continued. The poor know you will not hire them in rags and bags, no phone, no
address, and often no hope.
48
The shelters were presenting another view for there the people were getting rest
at night and meals, but , during the day, they were blotted out of the
mainstream.
To ask for help often is the only way, many can make it through the day
or week.
Often I was given an offering in my street ministry but under a
surveillance type that meant to the crowds not to give an undetermined amount
of money, though this was “put it to good use”, many of them knew nothing of
my music, my Jesus and my ability for concert or contacts.
Are you to save a moment, of the poor??? I would suggest: buy a question
and answer pamphlet, about the bible, and insert money for a meal. This saves a
poor person.s moment, though you may not save their life or their day, you can
save their moment. When Jesus spoke to the multitude, he also fed them.
I would also suggest, ask the poor what their favorite text is , for in childhood
we all recite verses of God, this helps them to participate, it offers good they can
receive and return.
My Guidelines, written for the poor, are the things I lived by for many
years.
I would suggest:
Pray often, rise early, find a daily rest for heavy articles, do not encourage
strangers to tag along with you.
Carry all bas with necessities, toiletries and one sleeping bag all winter.
Get on line and email for help. Take courses in Junior College, prefer to sleep
alone at night.
Don.t worry about the college classes, if you have no goal in mind, you can be
involved in community interests., especially if you, like me, have surpassed three or four
years of college and university work.
Eat at the Lord.s Kitchen, go to church every weekend, there are sometimes
vouchers and food.
Offer your services of good will in return, help others if you can, discourage bad
and vulgar talk, many may still not know you have good capabilities.
Get a Post Office Box. Or ask to use and address you can trust, for mailing
important things you need..
Ask for help and directions.
Apply for government aid if necessary.
Sanitize your personal items, don.t be a germ bearer.
This guideline was written for one sheet production in 2007 when all my missionary effects were
stolen. This is when I began to write the Governor of the State of California.
49
YES, I WAS LOOKING FOR THE LOVE I BELIEVED WAS THERE!
Now about the bible
Read it!
When you are reading a prophets works and do not read the bible, you are not
fully instructed.
I read by book many chapters at a time.
For context of a subject,”… here a little , there a little…”
Color and ink it, many times highlighting special places
When teaching , I use the lectionary or study guide for pastors for that
season.
Lesson study plan is good too, but it does not show you have studied “… to
show yourself approved…” it is for joint study with others.
Also when Quoting for writing songs, God has given me ideas from his
word and much of it takes a poetic form.
Water my garden for i.e. is about the parable of sewing.
Tempted for i.e. is about the temptation of Christ.
God and the plucking man is about Christ saying if your eye offends you,
cast if away from you: the meaning of unprofitable works.
I ask for the meaning of things as I go along with the Lord, perhaps it will
bear out in the song.
“SHAKEY”
Though I know Christ, I could not grasp answers of steady income, the
thing that most humans equate” success” with=income.
I entered a recovery program for abuse of substances, the one thing our
family should be glad to know and there I sat all the week, day after day,
between help and job search. I would go to the station at the churches and then
to rehearsals ,trace the bus back and forth the two days on the weekends, the
180 bus, and the 181, then the 177, then the 178 then the 183 then the 201.
Then the 256, then the 485, then the 264 , these all connected me to church and
conference office, back and forth when the John Carter report began.
I attended school for career search although I was an honor student at the
Glendale College and Cal State LA, I couldn.t scrape money together to complete
upper division levels after 1984,( the year of my upward climb in professional
music,) some people rebel at this, when obvious talent and scholarship is
overlooked..
50
At night carrying my bags everywhere and learning the mission response as a
needy person was the answer for the, “ right now” of it.
I say where I was being helped in some areas while being “ played” in
other areas, the “star” world interchanged truth for a lie of what we have to do
while poor, this is commonly called exploitation, I found that people were no
longer interested in my experience because poverty meant to them the everything
of my personal worth..
I relied upon the place I must go where others were getting help.
There I saw the suffering and I had the same experiences of struggle and
“suffrages”, as did they.
In 2001 I turned my contemporary program of street music into street
ministry and missions, God is so good to me.
Through the years
Through the years since childhood, we/I would study my bible and prepare my
program:
Programs for church
Introits, meditation music
Doxology, praises to god
Opening songs, hymns, offertory, interlude music
Special music
Selected praises
Invitational, appeal or call music
Songs for repentance
Songs of communion
Closing hymns and processionals,
These, along with the classical music program in progress since early teens, and
graduation programs.
I directed choirs, and was lead singer for some years of music programs
There are also weddings and funerals numerous to perform. Service for
friends, relatives and members of churches.
There is also the birthday and anniversary list
Our composers led us to special programs:
BACH BEETHOVAN, VIVALDI, RAVEL, SCHUMANN, SHUBERT, VERDI, BURLEIGH, HUMPHREY, CROSBY,
CROACH, BRADBURY, HOOPER, HANCOCK, GAITHER, MICKELSON, HANDEL, RANKIN, NICOLIA, STOKES,
STROUT, AKERS, TO MENTION A FEW OF MY FAVORITES.
ALL FOR BEAUTY, RIGOR, ENERGY AND INSPIRATION
I AM THE BEWARE!
LOW JAZZY, NO JAZZY, WHY ALL THE NOT SO HOLY READY TO DANCE MUSIC, DOES NOT
PREPARE ME FOR WORSHIP, A TIME AND PLACE FOR GOD, MUCH OF MY KEYBOARD RENDITIONS
HAVE THIS SOUND BUT, I SAY TO YOU BE WARE!

WORKING AROUND THE CLEARING HOUSE.
I used to love being around the
house, it was so clean and the detail to “house pretty “was a
pleasurable domestic lifestyle.
After many years, yes, more than twenty where I was not a
domestic housewife and mother, I found myself, again cleaning my
area just like I did when I got married.
Everything, including baths done in time for sunset. I did not even
have to ask if anyone else did it that way, for when I was in my

• No general invitation is given for going to church when you are camping out.
• The long walks I took, because I had no money and feared generally to be beggarly on
anyone including my family, was a price I was willing to pay, thus I trusted in God for the
outcome of my general life, even when it seemed no one would hire me ever again.
• As a house-wife, there is no chit chat, and if you are inclined to go to church during the
week, there is no time to be a busy body when worship is over.
• After the nineties, some folks would pick me up and cart me off to the churches where
programs were being presented. There was no gossip, no playing around, just preparation
and performances. Three concerts a year and worship and praise service calls. There was
also the business of outreach, in my designated corner, the convalescent hospitals and the
street ministry were every weekend.

“Extreme makeovers”, dictate to us what we should do in the smile we cannot pay for, nor can
we expect the safe sleep we can get, without God, we are nothing. Generally, I got by with the
singing and obligatoes of minstrel music and Praise music that was popular during the nineties.
Using the techniques I learned in College, (having been to a number of them ) I lived it up
singing in the best possible way I could, and I felt affirmed again and again, through audiences
and the things I heard in the general public as well as at church. You can see me, practicing my:
“a ,e, I, o ,u’s”. here, as well as looking intently for the bus or riding on the bus, there is even a
picture of me serving in church.

• Violin or other tool or instrument with music.
• Advice:
• Don’t talk to strangers. Its o.k. we are Christians, but even then
when you are subjected to the out doors without a place to go, you
learn, not to be glib about your comings and goings.
• Find a place to leave your gear during the next day (these are
guidelines also printed in the ”The Missionary or in the
”Indigence,” portions, of “Songs, For Souls” book by, Claudia
Humphrey ).
• Who wants to know more? I sure don’t, I would have thought.
• These times don’t give you a choice on what might happen to you,
if you have no script and no “Know How”, what do you do? If you
are getting ready for Sabbath, Clean up should be done by 3 or 4
Friday afternoon. Remember room check in the Adventist
dormitory?

• When at last, I had time to rest from the labors of camp and
missionary tasks, most of which was street visitation and
congregational meetings with sinners. I found myself sighing the
first and second year, the relief that God had called me to the
times of refreshing, began to have meaning the first time in my
life.
• The work was music and still is, for eternity, the Praise of God
and His wonderful works among men. I would sing often in the
streets of Pasadena and Glendale, some also in Los Angeles. There
no one called me names, they listened as intently as they did in
church.
• But for the bewildered, occasional listener who did not have
God in their life, it was to them a mental problem to be solved if
they came across me in my street ministry or singing(as my
missionary license says). “ as any opportunity arises.”

SOULS”)
You want the real story about Claudia Humphrey, this told, in the third person singular, all the gory details of
rebellion and submission do not precede other youthful graces that God supplied.
Most people look for the ending, then, sigh with relief so that they can get through the book.
This story is ongoing in terms of her commission and those things you may feel have been
omitted are instead unfolding to everlasting details in her ministry which exists today.
The rebellion has been a story of learned behavior, from the standpoint of the social psychology of
community norms placed upon her from the onset of her parents divorce.
Most of the things she learned through God, brought such a difference in action, one would not know
where to begin, except to say she was in the fifth grade when she made her first announcement about
being a singer.
The vanity and vexation of spirit is certainly true, because all attempts proved not to be successes in
terms of what she believed were being taught her from qualified experts in music, because the unknown
factor is how will things turn out when she tries them?
What angle would be best for what she is trying to achieve and, who are most likely the people that take
the responsibility for understanding God.s gift in her?
She knew God was on her side, for every attempt led to success either in invitation or employment or
schooling.
Being placed in the venue of the world class DEBUT, meant she would have to have a sponsor world
class and an agent, but not one who would question did those things she already achieve, exist, due to
academia, that is obvious, along side of news articles, the supportive evidence.
Prolonged service for a musician can be in the category of choice of music with the proper leadership
to co-sign the participation and performance. Yet one has to suspect
That prolonged service would lead to a larger arena, and Claudia, having already sung for the
Metropolitan Audition and the General Conference in 1980 meant she had attained and surpassed the
longevity of her peers who did not related on those levels.
As a minister.s wife, Claudia was imbedded into the radio broadcast,” Today.s Hope,
Tomorrow.s Peace”, KFMM and KFSG, later at Oakwood College the “Opera Matinee” broadcast. These
artists call, ” Feathers in your caps”.
When rebellion took over in the late 80.s Claudia.s debut had already happened and that was all
about continuance and station in life. She did not know that the bottom
65
would drop out, there is nothing to go on if There is no information that tells you what could happen if
finances are not thereto pick you up, out of a lapse of concert work or introductions to other audiences.
All the trouble, all the talk,
There were no articles or tabloids.
The church was very understanding, “yea” even forgiving, even though most of the
Rebellion took place away from church audience and places of worship.
Claudia found a place to talk to God about what was happening in her four
year gap.
Grateful for the forgiveness that she met, she clung to it. In His mercy, she even now
reflects what God brought her out of, and putting them to pen or to other.s charge of
the information, is very difficult in surveyal of what was really going on.
The months of separation from her husband, were when the children, ( the
girls, Hillary and Kahlara) were Age 10, and 16. These formative years so vital to their
growth, were buffeted by no mother.
For example, when Claudia had work she was accused of some wrong doing( which
meant fixing her hair on the job), and that job was where she lived 24hours a day and
had time to spare then, in fear ,she let her baby girl go to live with in-law, because the
employer let her go, after which the employer asked her back, but she had released
her daughter by then.
Soundness of mind, and body were, what will Claudia do if pressed by her
circumstance, can it be agreed upon, what is necessary, and will Claudia follow
through with an alternate or other rational plan if the obvious thing to do does not
emerge. Hardness of heart, or voice, or look came plenty towards her, as though every
answer lay within her to do. Claudia would pray for guidance and help and the
outcome was, do what you know, and what has always been expected of you.
Employment would not give in and give space to her, in terms of always being
homeless,
meant always unemployable, but on the stage, Claudia always performed top level
and brought to her audience, the deportment and dress required for such an occasion.
Was this then a myth that Claudia lived in this world of poverty among
excellence?

Dialogue box:
The norms of dress, deportment, classism , education were all supposed to be
middleclass American, but in reality they were center American negro.
Where the norms of Claudia.s life were set around the minstrel characters of family
and stage performances learned through the acceptance of her fellow students, and
clergy and church people. The Negro Spiritual had a wide base in the foundation of
her training, and many concerts and recitals audiences loved the old traditional music
that told the slave stories of the American negro.
The stretch of the skin color issues had nothing to do with the performances laid
out over the span of 40 years concert work, because from formative years, Claudia was
singing at church and other significant places where music was to be heard.

From the earliest recall, she knew she was not like everyone, as she sat
a child, on the furniture in the living room pretending, she had a piano and
she called the sound, “glinging”.
As time went by, she was in her own world view and others would be
allowed to comment either for her, or about her, but what really she saw was
what she knew and what she heard was supernatural.
The music,(she said) just flowed beautifully in her head, sometimes so
glorious, she could not comprehend or like others even learn it. She looked for
those sounds having been coached by her mother and grandmother. They said,
“…find a sound you like, and make that sound.”
_____________________________dialogue box:
Recalling a childhood, mixed with love and fear, separation and divorce, this child went
from elementary private school to one year of public school, being involved in musical instrument
training and encouraged in vocal solo work and honors in her elementary graduation.
The reflections she gives are scanty because hunger and deprivation was a legal issue of
alimony, not clear to her children how, it became that way.
There was no seeking of justice in the welfare system of her home state and the
grandparents who were also loving had an extended home toward these three children (her and
her two brothers). Claudia’s Mother was a student nurse who spent her waking hours at the
hospital in training, and the children were “latch key” kids.
68 Claudia began to believe her sound was like Georgia Laster and Leontyne
Price, in those days, that was known as great and beautiful sounds that the voice can
make. It takes hours of devotion to make those sounds.
As she walked around the periphery of the music center trying to find the
entrance to the great halls in Los Angeles, (the Disney center was not yet heard of)
finally she entered a door that was familiar to her. Dressed in plain but clean
clothing, she looked for volunteer work, and was assigned to the offices of the Music
Center.

The attempt to edit this book has placed God in a precarious position of trust
that she would do what he asked her to do, with regard to making sure he document
is correct and clear. She thanks God alone, and does not look for excuses, for
completion and submission of these facts to the world as they look onto this story in
its final form.
69
Back at the welfare office, she was bewildered at the focus she had on
life as adjusted by her income rather than her scholastic achievement, but
refused to let her behavior follow the rebellion, her mind was in.
Ma was a good singer, but far from home, and the children she loved
dearly, were, in the care of others, because, though she had achieved well in
school, she was buffeted by an unbelieving world, and that world view was
the enemy.s way of keeping her in her place, which was no where.
Claudia.s CHILDREN by Wayne, PHOTOS, HERE:
BOTH CHILDREN HAVING LEARNED SOME OF THE SAME REPETOIRE FOR THE ACADEMY OF
PERFORMING ARTS AND THE SETTLEMENT SCHOOL WOULD REFLECT A FORMER KNOWLEDGE OF
SONGS THEIR MOTHER TAUGHT THEM.
Dialogue box:
If love for your children is the only axiom for action, then Claudia
would qualify. However we find that the many spaces missing in the total
view and span of time is not seen, the long hours of waiting for word from
them, being in the charge of each grandmother, and no one asking Claudia
how were her children doing. Many passers-by in the between times, behaved
as though she had no family or history to be concerned with, was how they
made it her concern to stay out of the view and lives of anyone else, and not to
draw any attention to herself.
As the Merciful God would have it, others came to rescue her to take
care of herself, these benevolent circumstances came in terms of bus fare to get
to meetings, and daily meal allotments that she stretched into clothing
vouchers and clean up times. She would notify her children, often of her
whereabouts but this was after a long span of eight years not being in close
proximity. 1984 to 1992. There was no calling their mother and telling of
school, progress, photos, up-dates of important happenings, just a huge void
of, “wonder what is happening…”( it was as though I was on a singing tour
yes, I was singing a lot but not really on tour.)
70
MUCH EARLIER, in Philadelphia, she stood singing the
introduction to the opera audience there, was the beautiful Aria;
“Vissi D’ Arte”, by Puccini, for Mayor’s and Governors at the Samuel
Evan’s Banquet, this soprano artist, sang. She made the gown which was a
spectacular Fuchsia pink formal length “poe’de’soire”(satin like) fabric,
the pictures were for the Steinway Hall, Los Angeles debut, the same year.
She relied on that dress three times that year the other time being
the United Negro college fund banquet in Huntsville Alabama, she was
asked to write the musical fanfare for the festivities.
The husband was an executive, but Claudia and her husband did not
know that the government cut backs would mean the end of their
marriage the second time.
____
DIALOGUEBOX:
Going to “Phily,” was a second time trip(1984), the first being years after the
marriage, when the husband.s father died.
Claudia felt distanced by the attitude prevalent, that she would never be a part
of the family, but she blended into what they would do and kept her God of service
and duty which included visiting the prisoners in the Philadelphia prison systems
and singing for them.
Her mother similarly had Claudia to always sing for the patients in the
hospitals where she took her nurses training, this attitude of helping others seemed a
great relief amidst the air of trouble brewing by substance abuse.
In all the family history, both hers and the husband.s, the interaction of a
family of musicians is always at work in the Claudia lifetime. She and her brother
Shannon have performed the Handel.s Messiah, consecutively for more than a
decade. Shannon,(the eldest brother) a veteran of the army has made many singing
journeys of excellence in music.
The in-laws too, were musical but there was no geographical way of putting
the scope of a larger combination of family people together in those days east and
west did not join often enough.
71
What is a daughter of God doing in a dilemma like this?
Claudia reflects back to the scene in front of the Music Center in Los
Angeles. Oh how she wished she could fix this, but she couldn.t, and should
the story be told, how will that change anything, how will it make a
difference.
She focused on the girls and hope they are in good spirits and
circumstances, fearing that her decision to trust her relatives to care for them,
would ultimately be the best for them, no T.V. Shows and interviews to let
people know how she and her children were getting on.
You know everyone says a child belongs with their mother, but after the
husband.s job loss 80.s and the sporadic unemployment or unemployment
checks with no connection, to her University studies, or her employment at the
hospital those years, she was in terrible back strain, and she was hospitalized,
after which she was struck by a car in Philadelphia.
Dialogue box:
Here is Claudia, with no “delusions of grandeur,” for she had
already attained acclaim of world class in two performing categories, one
of high compliment audition at the Metropolitan Opera in New York city
for Rise Steven’s the Executive Director of Auditions.
The other performing category, her own itinerary of debuts, were in
San Francisco Soloist and President with the Cal state Choir, and the
other debuts in Huntsville, Philadelphia, Portland, Oregon and Los
Angeles. Yet here, she was made to feel, small and out of place,
inappropriate to her surroundings and odd and different than that of
which is required. These being God’s lessons in humility, were strange in
the face of the expectations of training for attainment, in honors and
scholastic achievement and stage performance, all being given direction
through Qualified Instructors.
On the street for a hot minute as a homeless person, not one would
take an interest in the attainments she had made, more than that they are
liable to call her insane or dreaming, to mention such attainments, which
through the years, leaves its scars of loss, of history and belongingness.
Claudia made all her costumes from age 14 for her going out to
banquets and singing for audiences. A trained seamstress and listed with
Daisy Kingdom, in Portland, where she at one time sold fabric to
customers of the Multnomah county area and took an interest in the
“Quilters” groups.
The kindness of other took her in, after she sold her mobile home,
bewildered on which way to turn, she traveled back to Los Angeles, and
Her Dad looked over her, for a time.
72
The husband had throat surgery, and they could not make it on their
own, thus relying on relatives to take them in. In this case there were extended
family relatings with other countries, this being where the strain was, who
would lead out in the family, as the older folks were getting on in years.
Her mom and dad had been divorced and remarried, and she chose to
leave the kids with each grandparent, one to her side of the family and the
other to his side of the family.
Dialogue box:
This husband was a hard to catch for marriage at the first, a fellow of
the east.
In Claudia.s training, they went to “college days” visitation in the
Southland of the U.S. The tours of the sixties, where the introduction was
made through a close friend. She and he made a date that same week.
They corresponded for many weeks before he came to California, and
lived with her and her mother, and after a month, proposed. They eloped, not
having clear approval from both sides of the family.
This was a scripted message of, I wouldn.t do it, not, do not do it!
So Claudia and her beau, selected a well known pastor of Pasadena and
went and got their health approved for marriage.
The wedding took place in the home of the Pastor in Pasadena. And the
elopement honeymoon was clearly there, most blissful and happy.
After those days, they returned to her apartment, and soon got a place of
their own. Claudia was working for the public utility at that time, and was all
the buzz about her virginal ways, in an area where chastity was not the normal
choice.
The ingénue previously had gone to Los Angeles High school and was
enrolling to Los Angeles City College the year of her graduation which took
place during her honeymoon period the first year.
This new hubby decided to quit his job at a local mercantile and go to
finish college, so off they went, which wisdom did not speak of her to transfer
to another public utility, she thought she would be cared for, as wife, and after
the first year, a soon to be mother.
This didn.t last, for after the child was born, they moved back to Los
Angeles from the college place and pursued employment, the baby was born
and the divorce was soon after.
73
Recalling that since Claudia was a senior scholarship student at Cal
State Los Angeles, the obvious thing would be, get connected right away
and go back to college her last semester. But no one rallied to her cause. This
is why she rebelled. It was too much to expect that the social structure
that made her of some worth, would deny her entry or re-entry to
her own station of scholastic achievement, some default not of her
own making.
Stop! Why dare her to think in terms of exploitation! She slept on the
steps of the temple front and the churches, in a prefabricated camp site. Often
buffeted by her circumstance and wondering if she could pull her life together
through some strange turn of events, or some gentile poverty, she prayed:”
God, “…Please keep me from hurt, harm, and danger.”
Dialogue box:
Here we see a gap of time when the marriage that ended in
divorce, began again with re-marriage by a different pastor in Los
Angeles. The husband worked with the probation department to get
his degree in social science. They would on the weekends endure
long drives to Los Angeles to fellowship with a friend’s church, the
acquaintance being close friends of the groom, were very tidy in
their life and expressions of musical endeavors.
The couple moved to Portland, Oregon, Claudia’s home town,
where Hubby’s first employment after graduation was with the
Metropolitan Steering Committee, who hired the both of them, her
in office, and he, in executive capacity after which in a year they
moved again to the college area.
Having solved the problems and dilemma’s of the past, (the
couple being united again) had a second child, another daughter.
The service and duty of the husband took them to the Camp
Pendleton area, where he worked and she was a house wife and
church organist, as well as choir director in the “Fallbrook” Camp
Pendleton area.
This was the year before Claudia started actively writing
music. The University of Redlands took her on as a student, where
she flourished as a soprano opera student in general studies, yet
performance of noteworthy endeavors were her call when studying
under Dr. Walter Martin.
The ideals of perfection were underway, even though she in
particular did not see herself in the public eye other than a very
good singer, it was the OPERATIC views of professional instructors,
that eyed her to a perfected state.
74
The solution of abuse programs could help her but would never reveal
this story.
Claudia put herself through rigorous energy of self revelation and
devotion to God, while working with others the questions of what admissions
to substance abuse can mean to her and her family.
Ultimately, this meant a whole ream of other information that much of
it is of private concern in the vagrants life let alone some one less harmful in
the public with no violence in her history.
The picture of the singing “glinging” Claudia girl, had lost its focus, for
the reality was though she had admitted her backsliding, she was not given
the logical conclusion of this situation, and that is, to hire her “abilities”. She
would go to various places prior to her husband.s job loss, but the view of her
was indigent and obvious prejudice against her present state, not her past
achievements, and certainly not her skills or trade.
Dialogue box:
No one dare estimate the hours of time on the feet of a homeless
person, who by any means must get there, ever on foot, such is the tale of
most, eventually down to no income.
The years just prior to complete homelessness, were those that are
little income in nice positions of work but sporatic and not enough to
stretch without working several jobs to make the difference, which in
choice means she had to leave her mobile home that she had bought from
the settlement of the “hit and run” accident in Philadelphia, and then
make a decision how to live on the rest.
These times were careless morally, and by the time she returned to
California, she had to totally rely on her dad, and welfare. The welfare
office sent her to be tested for social worker, because she had at least two
years of college. That time was only for one exam and the often moving
about in between, meant walking long distances from Santa Monica to
inner city or century city to Los Angeles. Later some walks from Glendale
to Pasadena, took 3 hours.
People began to be vague again with Claudia on where to go and
what she was to do. Here again she found usually no management level at
places where she thought would be a good part time job, the distance was
much greater now on foot and the loose time, daily, began to be foggy with
discouragement.
75 Thread bare feelings took over in the well groomed training and anxiousness
was replacing common ordinary needs to prepare, for each day. She would often
resort to staying in the library to read, or practicing a piano somewhere, if no one
would give in to her whereabouts at the time she was practicing.
This was simply unacceptable to her and she would connect with the temples
where she slept the night before, hoping some lead or some call or mail would reveal,
someone was going to rescue her, for from hearing a teaching that suggests that this
means “under persecution,” still as such cannot be acted upon, even relatives are
supposed to take you in by California law, however Claudia would not go to anyone,
she believed she should find her way not be a beggarly element among relative and
friends, for to them, and to mankind, to “…come boldly before God…”, was a gutsy
ignorant move.
The vagaries of contacts, as though she would one day come out of the fog, and
prostitute her life until rescued, was prevalent in the attitudes around Claudia, (see
the pictures for some details, general location and bussing routes) a constant fear and
desperate quietness and a prayerful watch became her daily seeking, as she visited
church and shelter in the two cities, Pasadena and Glendale.
Many weekends she would go to her Dad.s place to visit.
Dialogue box:
What can support the evidence that, Claudia wanted to work with God, and was
indeed and in fact doing ministry? Only those who acknowledged her music ministry in the
past, were giving support of moral concern for her visitations and the singing in the
audience,
This performance was a clear departure from the solo work that managing ministers
had formerly called Claudia to. But the overriding factor was that even though Claudia was
well educated, to her senior, university year, that would not be relevant to those who
constantly review the aspects of your life in terms of money, position, and geographical
scope.
In the heavens, God accounts for us all, and as we pray, our earnestness is
reflective in supportive ways from him.
The public interest did not reflect that God was indeed on Claudia’s side and that
God had a genuine concern for her moral behavior, daily sustenance, physical well being,
and contacts with friends and relatives.
She would have to surmise, through meditation and prayer, the leadership of God’s
direction, of what and how to do things, as the days spanned into weeks and months, yes,
and years.
You have a mental problem? You can tell the state, to get disability, she had no
mental problem, so the state could not take care of her, she had physical problems that
were borderline, poverty is an economic problem, and no problems came in the medical
review, and no state aid assisted her there.
Claudia had a financial (economic distress=”Extreme Hardship”) problem, and with
the help of welfare, at times she was able to get by from week to week at length some ten
years.
From all these aspects, she derived the opinion that mission work was the central
concern, and whether she could or could not be a figure in the workings of the missions
remained to be experienced.
76
77
The call came through a person of *noteworthy acclaim, and the assignment
was to sing solos and join the local singing group.
This group was interracial and had a number of aliens who were trying to
become citizens but for some reason, alike as they, she was not able to get into her
previous station or work, and those aliens were not able to become naturalized
citizens. The artist Claudia though, had already news worthy acclaim in the Glendale
Ledger and News Press, for Civic Light Opera work.

Dialogue box:
Safety and travel, bus-ways, were hoped and insured constant public input
to her daily review and tenacity to connect her musical programs and carry her
violin and bags on the bus for 22 years.
Eventually the concert season in the poverty developed into street
ministry on the corner of De Lacey and Colorado in Old Town, Pasadena. By 2008
has become a Harvest ministry, waiting new life to take over the constancy of
music and worship programs offered there.
On the street you can see all types of people, trying their skill at an
instrument, and some organizations who bring seasonal Christmas programs to
the areas.
The reception by the public is always positive and helpful. As the years
have gone by the last three years have been hard on Claudia’s throat but no
colleagues or peer’s worried about her well being or health, two angels became
benevolent toward Claudia in 1994.
The carrying of music, and equipment was very tasking. If by the bus she
continues, there is more interaction with people who might need help, that is
one aspect, then, they are the passersby, who might offer themselves as part of
the answer, in offerings or in comments.
Experience began to teach her that the actual giving of funds is separate
in helping with momentary meals for the poor, because the contacts must be on a
private personal basis and not revealing the poor peculiar needs of each
individual. While the cities usually have meal programs, there are many, who
daily do not get the “Lord’s kitchen”(dinners for the poor) or other handout
programs for the poor, and some programs are phased out.
* “ The World’s Finest Organist”( came as hero to the rescue, asking Claudia to sing for
the church work) he is the one who goes out on the highways and byways and brings you in.
78
THE PEOPLE
The people involved themselves into Claudia.s life, MANY PEOPLES FROM
EVERYWHERE, some voices she heard along the way.
You hear voices, you pay attention,
But these actual interactions were simply common greetings as such you meet in daily
life, until she began witnessing in street minstrel work.
There was no money to be had, and those people who suppose that you can just make
it by breathing the air, were of no help to the reality of that level of pain, the aching feet with
hole marks the size of a half dollar, the fear of being stranded, or having to go to the restroom
and there is nothing open in the middle of the night, who will be there when you search for a
resting place? Can you live outside? No extra sandals for your feet ?,or a purse to carry?
Can you preach in an instant? Do you like people saying you are a mental problem?
Do you fold under the improprieties of “always”, or “Ever”?(always in your face and ever
near you?)
Dialogue box:
“Greater works shall you do…”, can be imagined in Claudia’s mind
as, distance and time element expected to completion of her ministry
here on earth.
While enlisted in service above, Claudia believes that the
continuation of ministry is eternal Praise and Adoration to the Only True
God, the Father, and that through the Son and the Spirit.
Claudia Praising voice “…can be heard for blocks, (is said by
passersby,) yet as time developed, given weather conditions, the length of
time the vocal chords are used in singing and preaching, the travel
distance an hour to get to the location are all factors in the change and
need for replacements, and this includes the learning new instruments
on the street, like the violin, taken up after many years already singing for
the public, all extreme challenges, all pressed and without a formal call,
and paid salary.
Claudia, ” The Minstrel”, who sang simply concert songs and
classical arias (from the academic University studies) was an attraction to
the “known” songs and repertoire of great composers. This was the
impetus of getting the people’s attention and perhaps getting pointers on
employment.
Some agencies that knew she sang would say…”why don’t you just
sing…”, when they knew she was looking for employment… they had no
grasp of what she was going through to find work.
Other persons would offer food, but were seemingly ignorant of the
the moments, days, weeks, months and years to all the other aspects of
Claudia’s life.
79
In the public and never in private, the feeling of clothes sticking to her skin, and the
fear of odor which meant drawing attention to evil or even to beast in the field at night.
CHALLENGES.
Trying to figure out how to live or if one could live. Sleeping on the grass, on the steps
in front of stores, in back of buildings, mostly for safety around the churches, was the resort,
high visibility, when fear was a follower, at night, CHALLENGES.
The expectations of daily life were much of how to get through the day carrying a
handful of bags with no where to rest them. On the weekends meeting many church people
Sabbath and Sunday, would ask how are you doing, but were not saying they were prepared
to do anything about it, left Claudia wondering, about all those people in the audience who
claimed they were of some wealth and station in life.
Dialogue box:
These aspects of daily living, were sometimes cloistered in private surveyal
of how to get things done expediently and not vocal to the momentary situations
that arise in poverty and public use.
The distance between safe points made it apparent that she had to direct
her prayers and attentions to safe ways of doing things and personal poise and
understanding her situation as well as transference of information to the proper
people as the need arose to get things done, the dictation of her life story and
aspects of the religious world and her own spiritual views, caused her concern for
would there be indeed enough time to finish and edit it, to get it into proper
hands after the copyright, were more than momentary concerns.
There is a need to see that the preparation day (Friday) is observed and
that the weekend, the church going and the visitations or the substance abuse
meetings would coincide with her readiness from about early afternoon Friday
spanning all the way to Sunday night, each night, on the street camping out.
Going to churches to ask for vouchers, or some organization, who would
give out vouchers and or clothing or food was helpful in those times. The
benevolent friends were also helpful, for when welfare was applied for, that
welfare, was not expedient in the necessity of momentary difficulties.
When in 2007, for example, all her missionary things were stolen, there
was a great gap of time when the welfare office, was not on time. All her checks, I.D.,
clothing, carrying luggage(the wheeled type) food cards, tapes of ministry, cleaning
materials, were reported stolen, but to none affect, also the violins, (four of them) had been
taken from her at various points, this was not retrieved though the police were sought.
In the ensuing years, off the bus and from the church locations, the missionary
efforts suffered, voids and time lapses in programs and information, though many listen
because of the program content.
Though often preaching as her license says,” as every opportunity that arises” she
still had to buckle up for the, constant refusal to believe that she was in fact ordained and
had reason to be where she was, the devil was busy making
Her license facts irrelevant to place impact of the call where it was designed.
The missionary’s who are poor, are viewed as not being helpful to anyone, nor good
use to and for themselves. The public sees this from an unconverted standpoint and self
sacrifice is viewed as a weakness in the person, not as a saintly, or godly way of living.
The public believes you cannot help someone if you cannot help yourself and that
is applied to, if you have no means, why do you think that preaching and singing is
helpful, being in and of it self the commission of Christ, seems that it does not resonate
to them as the commission, it seems to say to them there is a weak point in your
presentation, this then, is when they show they do not care to hear more.
80
There are places that poor people go in the day and night. A lot of vagrants eat there,
some of them are malefactors, two, some mall you, three, some make you throw up.
Four, Some complain about you in groups or holler your name across the city streets,
and that is strange if you do not make close friends of them. Claudia thinks of God in all this
and knows he holds her hand, she has the reassurance and comfort he is there, but to be sure
she would come to confession I John 1:9, and partake in communion.
___________________________________________________________________
Dialogue box:
The fear factor of exposure to all types of situations and all types of
people is evident when she had first stayed at a shelter.
There is also the reality of not having anything herself, and the horrific
feelings coupled with the stench and the hunger, gave impetus to
“unbelievable,” yet hopelessness.
The next day is just as bad because there was no money to go on, so she
was grounded to as far as she could walk, and certain that she was stalked,
each day.
Not knowing whether this was training, in the first place, and no vision
of how to make this information of value to others as they experience it, began
to be a challenge , a quest in her as her mind began to fathom ways and means
of doing things.
This then being the ways and means of helping others, as when her
father gave her help one year, she used it as an opportunity to buy bibles and
pamphlets and hand them out, hoping also to build a parish she needed a
“EIN” State number, to facilitate her own office of ministry.
Later as she developed a pilot program around the United States Lend
Lease Act, she became to be amazed at the indifference to her first hand
experience, to use a program to help the poor, because she knew exactly what
to do and how to measure out the constant needs.
Claudia spent the year 2007, notifying Heads Of State, and political
figures, as to the Pilot project, her letter to: ”…. Brethren of Faith and
Godliness” .
How can she stretch the information to usefulness in her life and times,
and also be useful to her own children.s life and times became the “saintly
search.”
If we are to be sacrificial at some point how indeed are we to be also
useful in a humanitarian point, can personal experience ever be viewed more
than someone.s exploitation, if not Claudia.s her own?.
81
Why confession, you think, why admission rather than omission?
What did she consider a sin?
Why wouldn.t she agree to some ways when everyone near were sleeping
around and making deals to get by.
What about her book that she wrote 15 years earlier and making her concert
work known, was this all left up to Claudia, was there no one to respond on the other
side of the world view?
This was not all that made up a day, and one must either decide to get out
there or completely stay out of the way, part of this life was making her look crazy, or
drawing attention to her, for no good, or productive reason, and that made America
seem very distant to her relating.
Dialogue box:
She would not think to harshly of herself for she was to employ the
ideals of her mother and father, intermingling facets of hygiene and beauty
from them both, to make the structure of completeness in this crude, rough
daily life.
Caring cleaning solution and clean clothing for the next day, was a part
of it, for if she was to wash in seclusion, Claudia would have to use methods
that would not attract fear or attention to herself or be a harm to herself or
others.
In the night, she would not ask to be around people or gather friends,
and in the day she would utilize every opportunity that was free access to the
job market and computers, to stay relevant with the community interests and
what was available in employment, doing what we are supposed to do often
has no merit or measure.
The nearby schools accepted her in some class of music or physical
education, here is where she was also each season to stay, clean and orderly
plus, attain records of her whereabouts at all times.
Making the missionary parts of her work, was not a guided lesson, but
this lesson of faith, unfolded into contacts each week for an hour of street
ministry and daily offerings of self survey at substance abuse meetings, found
to quell her problems, that arose from past failures, to abide by rules of God
and man, in that short period of *four years as well as some unrevealed earlier
times.
*four year span of moral loss
82
There is the library. You can.t carry big bags there.
There are the city stores, a lady can put on make up and use the
restroom, but she cannot bathe or wash up.
After the third day if you are not fully aware of your own presence in
the “primordial” ooze of life it won.t be long.
After about a year of pleasantries with others, one sees clearly, as did
she, that no one will hire her because she are already homeless.
________________________________________________________________________
Dialogue box:
These photos are typical of classroom and bus travel,
bereavement, of Claudia Humphrey, never out of public sight.
Although at the Universities: Of Redlands, Loma Linda and Cal State,
Los Angeles. Claudia stayed in the realm of city colleges working with honor
programs reflective of her book and mastery of voice, where she also received
an award for Aquatics, Terry Stoddard,( swim teacher and coach with a gentle
spirit and determination for his students success), Claudia took all of the swim
courses.
Later, Claudia had a heart attack and pneumonia in two short years,
ensued by deaths in the family, one being her dearest dad.
83
No phone numbers of “others,” would suffice those who would ordinarily call
her for work.
But in her case it is as though she had lost historiasm(value, determining of
events) or histiocyte (life connecting cells), because those places she was known seem to
all have new management and not hiring her. Aside from those who had retired or died
in upper management levels beyond her peers.
Good jobs like, administrative secretary for firms and hospitals, hospital work in
general, working for the university and agencies at some point very high levels of status
eyewitness, now seemed to look askance and not return her calls.
Claudia finally resorted to cleaning up in the these restrooms as a result of not
being able to take care of matters any other way, which kept her out of other troubles,
she was sure God was looking after her this way.
Sadly, though the accounts of homeless people, worsen, and the “no account “
recording of them filters through as valiantly they overcome or are champion in their
time, distance and lonely isolation, often results._________________________________
Dialogue box:
Claudia’s Mother, died of cancer the year of her ordination, she recalls
saying to her mother; “…They are finally ordaining women, Mother, and I want to
be a part of that…” Having heard this, her Mother was very warm toward her.
Claudia would write the Local Conference through faxed mail and email and
the General Conference President regarding her status work and efforts. Very
little was said about the street ministry, having been in the public eye so much,
there was no need to think it not generally known.
John Hancock, (who had earlier invited Claudia and her brother Shannon
D. Goodwin to General Conference) had retired and though efforts to contact him
or his son Dwayne were nil, Claudia contacted The Oregon Conference of S.D.A.
and enlisted their help and the help of her former elementary school.
In the keeping of contacts, whereby was an invitation to join the alumni
meeting of 2004, at the inception of Claudia’s Convalescent ministry to the
elderly, came the travel and she went to Oregon for the re-union.
What a joy, said she, to be with her old friends who had elected her to class
Chaplain, and to realize that her occupation had finally come to that, among
them were Don and Phyllis Hall.
84
For Claudia to take up the banner of obvious discrimination, would mean being
soundly warned that once again, you are homeless. “What do you think,” and “…who do you
think you are…” (Attitudes, towards her), at demanding, anything.
At that point it seems hopeless, the constancy of lugging everything with you
everywhere means the decision of find a lodging point even if you do not have your own
dwelling. Many times you can find little hide a ways, for things, to return and they are tossed
away.
Being given a promise to wash her clothes one day she hollered for help because
someone would not let her in. She was arrested, and did a two year summery probation.
Washing her hair in the mall restroom one day, seemed to be, the solution to her daily
problem.
_______________________________________________________________________
Dialogue box:
To be forthright and circumspect in the front of everyone daily, was demanding
beyond limits and the wait for buses in the early evening seemed endlessly cruel in the wait,
she would often pray, “…please God I am ready for the bus…”, or”…Please God, send the bus
now…”.
There were times when people would give her a handful of money, which was a relief,
and other times when the pastor.s (now deceased) allowed her “cart blanche”, to stay on the
back steps or front steps for safety and moral reasons.
The days were filled with mission singing and gathering helps, and trusts, when
necessary.
There were also, the available rooms, or garage or off to the side places to leave things,
but that gratis was coupled with service, that Claudia, gladly met.
Later when the sons and daughters of the Pastor.s had grown into some positions, it
was an apparent transition, that they were not able to abide with , that of the freedom that had
been given Claudia.
Even though she was now an officer of the church, by reason of her ordination, it did
not mean to them free use, that was expressed and applied to her, through the older
generations.
This is why Claudia says:”When you don.t know much by permission, then is to
guess, when you don.t have morals, then is to assume, when you don.t have scruples, trouble
ensues, but when you don.t have God, trouble never ends.”
85
Cleanliness attempted was punished by arrestment, no warm shoulder in the store
guided her to a better solution, we call, America.
This is called vagrancy or a person is called an indigent.
If Claudia did not have a place to stay, she might get arrested, and was told the
parameters outside, where she was to be of no harm to herself or others. She had to have
current I.D., even if she didn.t have money to pay for the renewal of it.
She worked around the temple and church rules as best as possible, and stayed in a
little room off the side of the church.
The concerts and recitals were on the weekends back and forth from Glendale to
Pasadena.
________________________________________________________________________
Dialogue box:
The inner-city work was music in the city with the senior centers, and these programs
came with meals, where you would offer your music and have lunch after, some being paid
engagements.
There was the visit also to the city commissioner.s Meeting, here at the
Commissioner.s meeting, you could reveal those things pertinent to your merge in the city.s
music programs and the general condition of your contacts,
To attain satisfaction for having attempted public acceptance, in field service, and
ability to do ambassadorial types of things, was what Claudia did starting in 1986
Having already sung in major Public Concerts and Recitals and reviewed by
Professionals, this would have to be an answer to continuance in the same venue.
She Visited also the Pasadena City Council and the Glendale City Council. At some
point, the “Elder Claudia” stood in the face of opposition to make sure the traffic and avenues
of travel sustain an opening for some of the main meetings in the city of Glendale. This served
to place her viewed by others as interested in the well being of the city, in general.
Although these things done and mentioned here were in the line of call and duty of
most people who minister, the general public of low income status were unaware that strides
were being made, and they were not selected by officials as a voice in what could relieve the
situation of the poor income bracket. There were no petitions circulated that alluded to the
state of the poor, although genuine concern could have come through petition signing.
As Claudia was asked to be on the Presidential Prayer team, she could see unfolding,
ways to get the message of the state of her surrounding poor for help and aid in a daily basis,
that culminated into the already mentioned Pilot Project “city of God” introduced as a project
in 2007. The work on this is delayed by financing and communication.
86
Claudia Humphrey.s boss, (P. Mickelson), would call her to sing and that is exactly
what she would do. Eventually, she became an ordained elder and clung to the church
programs, even though no other work or salary was offered.
She was given meal gifts but no promise of introductions to greater opportunities that
she had known before her rebellion.
She loved her boss, but found no return for possible union with him or other men,
having been divorced, and tried to be morally clean along with being presentable for the
occasions that arose from the call.
_______________________________________________________________________
Dialogue box:
She could see that couples were paring off, but to her they did not go. In her opinion,
Claudia.s reputation didn.t follow her, because her rebellion took place away from the crowds
of church fellowships and organizations. When she returned from this rebellion miraculously,
no one noticed that she had been gone, and her life was amended after *”four years” of
hard turns. There were other times when she felt as though men were interested, but she was
far too busy being devoted to give it too much attention, and she did not want to fail God in
her understanding of “Commitment.”
87
For five years when she started this new venture, she continued in celibacy.
Relating to old singing jobs and persons seem to be an open door, and that she did, as a
descant singer in most of the churches for visitation. Hoping that someone would hear and
give interest in her ability to sing, opening the portals of excellence in music given her was not
a means of introduction to higher quality friendships and jobs.
The relating seem to stay on the surface of how she lived rather than of her own innate
ability to do her music, which was a long time bewilderment into why do people think they
have the ultimate answer in getting ahead, call themselves world class, when they have not
done the academics, and performance required to say those types of things. Then the aspect of
Church related programs must of course be with those ministers who they themselves have
attained recognition and academia required and not feigned.

Dialogue box:
What seemed like untapped time, was seclusion and utmost practice of hours of
anthology, before going to the street to sing. In the back rooms of the church and the choir
rooms, Claudia would hold a private rehearsal, sometimes, an artist in residence, as she took
upon her the learning of the great classical pieces and the study of the violin.
The practice of the piano, with recordings always not far behind each rehearsal were
for evidence of sound and improvement.
The benevolent ones, gave money for food, and Claudia would give of her tithe,
offering and stretch part of it for clothing that week. Never did she reach income to the
amount that the state requires for income reporting, In the early years when she was married
the churches hired her on salary as lead singer and she was paid by check.
But during poverty times, when responding to the treasury department, they informed
her of the amount she would have to make, in order to qualify for state and federal income tax.
The performances during the week, Sunday nights and Wednesday nights of singing,
and playing the piano and violin for church meetings, then later the choir rehearsals all picked
up to a professional readiness for programs, they all called Claudia for center stage
performance of the best quality.
Later, some would come that had no idea of the preparations involved to create a
really good sound and beautiful adoration to God that was allowed.
88
There was the entourage of children, who by hanging about learned her program that
she had done since childhood, but they made it a free for to see and “lookie loos” of corridors,
doorways and halls, to what was Claudia, not at all paid, fee, where SHOULD HAVE BEEN, a
free lance for her, paid fee to her, and tutiledge of her expertise.
Since 1978 when the Glendale College Music department first asked her to teach
private lessons, this would have been a natural job for her to assume. Thus their ideas of
“gig” were supplanted and eventually subverted the attention of the „DEBUT, RECITAL AND
CONCERT” Areas of her „COME., when also a field service credit in some college, could be
attained, other influences who were not of practice and devotion took hold to the easier ways.
Quick presentations and raggedy performances, two extremes one very loud and
blasting on the microphones and one soft as a young child who had no vocal training, so there
were no in-betweens and especially no harmony made, that would required excessive
concentration and practice.
The hopes of field service began to be very dim. Claudia played the piano off the
rooms from the Master Chorale for seven years in her poverty state, just the inspirational
music and prayer time, near the “camera club.”
One day, she made herself aware of some options for ministry and prolonged service
and started moving in that direction.
With the help and leadership, conversations and reading material while working with
several ministers in the Glendale and Pasadena area, she was able to do the work:
The Street music and the Convalescent ministry
Dialogue box:
The ideals of fashion, faded away, there was no making of
clothes in the arena of the 1990’s to 2008, and the clothing
reflected the hardship of the ministry at hand. The lovely dresses
that were complimentary to the feminine side gave way to the
military look of suit and pant suits so often warn due to the weather
and conditions that women had to bear in the economic extreme
hardship.
Claudia kept going to the thrifty answers and found clothing
that was well kept and acceptable covering. Creeping into the stage
were the wearing of former fashions that had heretofore been
rejected, and Claudia knew that she was not able to chorale the
youngsters who were using this method of attention, which some of
them also had the same shabby ideas of music and performance, a
quick method to a concert, there too was the unconnectedness of
aliens who, not being citizens trying to lead out, meant to her that a
“sound of command”, could lead to directions she was not
interested in.
89
Lest they forget
Claudia Possesses a Prolonged-Service record for over 15 years of service , as early as
1991.
The major recital in Pasadena was her Ordination recital in 2001.
Since that day, sporatic achievements of helping other poor and relating the ministry
on the corner of De Lacey and Colorado are her intent for long term harvest.
The past year or so, it has been mostly people who are unacquainted with the
ministerial work and do not relate well to street artistry of any kind, here they need constant
reminders of how it is supposed to be, how it was then and how it is now.

Listing the method of matriculation and success, will not supply you with
the exact way this entire scenario has taken place, which would, as some suggest,
lead to your commitment and call, should you like to be in the ministry.
Instead, what should you do if the call looks like this one.
Work with others. Pray often and always for God’s guidance.
Take actions that are of obvious help where selection and suggestions can
be made. Part of that (I found), is with The Presidential Prayer Team.
Stay in the public eye, that of the audience, or fellowship, that you select,
as ministry.
Study you bible all the time and pray often there too.
Lead out with your obvious talents, and look to improve what you have in
talents and skills.
Do not quit your day job. There might not be someone available to help
bridge the gaps.
Write you Conference Officials, and go to school where there is supplied
information, you cannot get through field service.
Stay sincere, even though your dedication is not merited or apparent to
others.
Focus on God’s love for you, and for others.
Keep a standard going and polish the standards you now possess.
Ask for help, ways and means. Be willing to walk the miles. Claudia will be
out there having done these things, ask yourself can you read the bible two times
in one year. Claudia can. Learn lots of hymns and sing all the time.

THAT IS FROM THE OLDER HYMNALS?)

“ ...MY GLORY, ALL THE CROSS…”, DO YOU SAY,”… THAT IS JESUS!”
“O that will be Glory for me, when by his grace I shall look on his face…” (traditional hymns

In teaching anyone else about encouraging them into a relationship with Jesus, we would want to support our views with why this scripture was given and
What God was saying about the times and the people who had erredaccording to faith.
I would not suggest I were a prophet, or someone who had that special calling to counterman the actions of whole communities or else they would be
dammed.

•Steve Boalt. Internationally recognized singing evangelist, At UCC(= UnitedCommunity Church) Calling
musicians to work in praise music since 2008, had become a new witness of music with a band stand. I could
resign now, for all my life work in sacred music was classical sacred, and negro spirituals. The black music that
became popular in the 80’s and 90’s was not an expression of my expertise or vocal quality. I too recognized
that an era was changing and I did not believe I was a part of the new era that was so different, and separate
from the messages of the past in Music. The people were no longer saying to me, “I came away from your music
program, healed from the music that was presented…”But the Street ministry retained the same audience of
respect and call, of appreciation. To me it was not the “operatic”sound that was convincing the listener, but
rather the intent and message they heard, in the selections and that moment of contact, where the spirit draws
all men. This was my loud cry.

•I wish you would study your bible more, some people work at finding easy
answers,while others steadily find answers.
•Then when we get together that is what we should agree on from day to day, what
we study, pray and apply in our lives.
•I started more earnestly and developed worship and song ritual like this:
Important texts should be inclusive of a range of topics. I would find a reading
room and study my bible texts and increase my usage of scriptureeven when
homeless, I find great assurance in bible reading. There were times when
organizations would help me get food for that day, I am so grateful for, the bible
helped me to understand my need and also to help others, there is strength in the
scriptures. John 5:39( you examine the scriptures carefully because you suppose
that in them you have eternal life yet they testify about me. ISV)
•KJV : “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are
they which testify of me.”)
•What you do to help others is a reflection of your purpose and direction, what life
gives you, and what you give in return.

I write no beautiful book•Do you have time to write a book?
•When was 33 years old, I did. And copyrighted it, I was so excited about it, I made a
recital around it. This should be coveting the best spiritual gifts, not to incur the wrath
of envious others, it should be a consistent portrayal of your life and Christ.
•I can only log my experiences, my songs, the pictures of my lifeand times.
•When I read my journal, I have to edit out thoughts that were meant only for private
introspection.
•I have to do apologetically what is an overview of life and times as I see them, can I
be willing to convince others of Christ and his return?.
•The ministry for others is a self awareness in the picture of your world view that you
may see the needs( through Christ) of others, then set out to dosomething useful
about it. We speak of gifts of the spirit in bible terms, but the actual working of the
spirit is your laying on of hands of that experience, not that you have glowing letters
and arts or resume, but can you do the task that is set before you and understand
with love the demand behind that act. Being”…instant in season…;’can you be a
Samaritan, or a word of knowledge to a situation that others would turn away or
spurn?
•It is not should I write a book, it is I must tell what is happening, so that others might
see and they too can be inspired to do something around them, intheir own realm,
their song, their life. I at times resorted to college credit for my book and honors
classes so that atleastthey would be sung around the youth in this age.

Gatherings of word combinations, is done because the learner is compiling meanings to what they want to say
in Hebrew, having not learned from a scholar, the idea is to supply two or three words or suggestive phrase to
what you want to say, this is of course for those who want to petition using some of the words in hebrew, and
not to suggest that these are the phrases used in hebrew, the attempt at drawing close to God in any
language, your own, is best, this process is simply a way I , for example may approach some particular parts
of my devotion, this is not a rule of faith it is an expression of my faith.

I know some call me reverend (only God.s name
I Reverend) some call me Mrs.,
some call me someone.s sister or someone.s
mother some call me by my first name. that part
is “rare”because, we were taught never to call a
person by their first name, how did humanity
get away from that generation of respect?
Some think that a title is a sign of certain level,
but you know that it takes little explaining
about the person if you give them due respect,
then there are not a whole lot of questions about
who and what they are. The dignity that the
Lord has said is due.
And there is the dignity of courtesy to all that
the Christian should express, besides ,
exhorting, imploring, rebuking, or pronouncing,
what is clean and unclean for our use.

that scriptural.

•I do not trust you, for you are implacable and insatiable in terms of what it takes to do the job right, to return from backsliding.
•I do not have faith in you I have to trust God because visibility means nothing to you, you will impose rules and regulations saying , “…no religion, no religion…”.
•On this hand the share and participation, keep it short type of sharing can be detrimental to the particulars, you cannot reshape the existence in a moment. You must
respect the keeping of scripture to those who obey it, for amends means truth unfolding, sometimes, little, sometimes much to over spilling. How does this affect
growth. Who is presenting the scenario? Is this coupled by educational awareness and structure.
•I have a problem I need to talk about, but there are no ears being lent to the problem,

THE MINSTREL (Songs, For souls”
Series)all rights reserved by Claudia Humphrey since 1976, Library of Congress ucc, international copyright
secured)
(missionary closure) Instructional manual
Is part of the “Songs,For Souls’ series by Claudia Humphrey, Soprano Evangelist.
If you are born after 1975 you may not know some of this in your curriculum,
Much to do with the subject is subjection toward a matter of Worshipping God.
Gilbert and Sullivan’s wandering minstrel is not our travels.
Claudia had exposure to high school after academy days. Herein supplies much
information of how and why things were taught and done by her in her musical
experience and contacts.
Those who are like me come from a family of musicians in our generations were
and are minstrels who set up their music where it will be heard.
As early as the mall at the Galleria in the 80’s where were, the summons to sing,
for public audience. In later times for her, in eagle rock for holiday greetings, even the
“caroling” in the neighborhoods added strength to her exposure to earliest performances.(
mom having us sing) for the old folks homes and for hospital patients when we were
children, Portland Adventist hospital where Claudia’s mother studied nursing while she
wrote the book the three sons of Noah”.
Claudia would often go on the famed sidewalks singing as she walked, would
eventually be discovered a spontaneous audience for the minstrel setting. The harvest
ingathering is another type of outreach door to door music.
Eventually in some of these ventures, comes the intuition (you say inspiration) to
continue in our heritage of music and sing for change($), that meant she had to invent
her own way.
There is no tutelage but God, telling you that he will watch over the experiment. So
gradually, she, mustering up courage(for my strength was conditioned on funds.) She
built up an avenue of trust and performance among the people, Pasadena, then Glendale,
and parts of Los Angeles. She had already in 1986 Sung for the
City Commissioner, Wilshire Ebell theatre, Bruno’s Restaurant and Sarno’s restaurant for
the opera scenes she knew from college.
Elected class Chaplain S.D.A. Elementary.

Questions and answers:
So, you want to write music?
This book will get to that part where music is notation in the 32 songs or if you
wish, in talking with you by email: write bishop_here@Yahoo.com for “FINALE
NOTEPAD” log onto the installation registration, on the internet. Or later, because we have to
establish, your endeavor and focus on your abilities, if you are a novice in
particular.
Those with experience will not necessarily ascribe to needing the
information that follows where you want to learn to sing or play and
instrument.( see other pages or table of contents). Do you have a strong
harmony-theory background in high school and college?
So you want to sing?
Go up to the podium? (age 3 doesn.t matter) at the altar they always sings
songs about God. Encouraged to sing young, is brought on by other singers
with knowledge and experience, who wouldn.t be
Page 117
glad, any of them, to help you start to learn, stage presence and stage decorum?
Teach me reverence!
Claudia loves the stories about Jesus and His love.
So…she went up there and she stayed, for a life time of
Altar music ministry which ultimately became Ordained work.
You can too, realize your calling. Sing your best songs for the church
programs select favorite hymns to start with and spiritual folk songs.
Wear your best church dress and present your best foot forward for God.
People dress up for parties and for friends, this suggests you dress up for God,
for a good performance of music and pleasant appearance leaves a good
message to the listener, that you care about the subject you are presenting, and
the “PORTRAYAL” OF
REVERANCE TO GOD, “…MAKES YOU AS AN ANGEL OF GOD…” II
SAMUEL 14:20. She was presented with her first violin at church, that has
started her back to school college days at LACC AND PCC, Community
College Orchestras. Southern California, and she has played a half a dozen
years, also presentations at University S.D.A. church Los Angeles, Ca and
Glendale City S.D.A. Church, Glendale, Ca., sometimes college and church
Co ordinate their programs.
In the congregation, are many people who have sung too, and they like to hear
you for the first time in your presentation.
Try simple uncomplicated songs that have a clear message.
Page 118
There are lots of composers of many, songs too numerous to count, one
hymnal may contain over seven hundred hymns for you to learn, Claudia has
memorized them from childhood and usually knows the first second and last
verses, of a lot of hymns.
Like the all popular, “Amazing grace…” And, “ Rock of ages…”.
There are all styles that differ one from the other and much more than the
plain songs we love are the more comp-licated drama of the “dark ages” stories
and victory songs.
Later you improve on what you offered in the song before. You learn an
instrument and play that too.
You call groups together and practice with them, or you are called upon to
work with others who start groups of music.
You take your music home and practice, Sometimes it takes long practices to
make it sound right and be worth hearing, no mumbling, clear words and clear
notes so the audience is not guessing the tune even when sung many times the
audience has to agree on the melody of what is being presented, Also the
camcorder or screen presentation should always be corrected to read the verses
clearly for the joint singing, there is no mixed message or communicating
another idea in the middle of the song on the screen.
If you are influenced by the “quick” concert method, it won.t sound like
much, a thrown together presentation is what they will get. You must be
equipped to eventually record your own sounds, also receive instruction from
Page 119
a qualified teacher on the enunciation of words and sounds consonants and
vowels, for distinctive, clear messages.
Because your stardom to the worship hour is only one hour a week. But in the
heavenlies, there.ll be a lot more worth hearing, if you devote yourself to
serious practice for shining example of reflecting the best music placed for
God.s service, just because the song has wide appeal does not mean you
personally have done a good job, and you
dress code should reflect you know the master and the matter of deportment is
reverent not crude to His Worship.
The joking at the podium and the loud playing of chopsticks or other such
playfulness do not belong in the worship hour, some jog along this path,
leading others to destructive listening patterns rather than “ always reverence
the space that belongs to the Lord” do not assume he enjoys your goof off
attitude and jangling.
Among the people. Read the book of Ezra, Nehemiah. And the 1 and 2nd
chronicles.
This is called musical works or music ministry. It used to be “ASAPH” at the
instruments, and singers with Jeshua.
Some start very early and accomplish a pleasing level of sound and
presentation that appeals to a lot of church going members.
Warm up exercises are not hard, you should do it every day and start about 15
minute practice.
Find someone who you like in the sound of their voice, and practice that
sound, a beautiful voice should be a good example if you want to sing
beautifully for God.
Page 120
Claudia.s grandfather, William allowed her a half hour practice in the
afternoons about five thirty every day to practice the piano from the seventh
grade onward.
When she got to Adventist academy the dean of women had her to play for
worship services in the morning or evening and occasionally, and for joint
worship, she had progressed to level five on her own before she got to her first
formal piano teacher in high school.
This is what she tells her students!: What.s the point of all this? (see the point,
in the underlined passage behind the numbered paragraph.)
1.) Select a song you like and practice it for memory so that when it is
presented you know it without looking at the page. This is a commonly held
view of a lot of teachers.
2.) After you have survived the first exposure of musical performance, whether
for church or for school, you will probably nervously seek more songs,
(consider broadening your interest and styles).
Nerves, what.s that? Butterflies in your stomach!
A scary feeling like your knees will give out on you.
This is usually from inexperience and not all people get it all the time.
3.) If you are diligent, you will find that practice will make things go smoothly
in performance, and you will feel less nervous, because you know what you
are going to present.
Page 121
People in the audience may help you by not pointing you out or making faces
or noises to distract you to ruin you r performance, This is important too,
usually people at church understand that something very important is about
to be heard, and church audiences collectively place the emphasis of quiet
surroundings, in their prospective.
5.) Speech is also important, you want to be able to introduce what you are
singing about and be knowledgeable in the subject of song or presentation.
6.) Find an accompanist, that is a person who plays the music on an instrument
while you sing.
7.) Work with them before the presentation so that you will be coordinated
together. If the person does not know the instrument nor how to follow the
singer or performer of instrument, then it will reflect on your part in the
program.
8.) There are a lot of people in the just getting started category that will help
you, but remember, much practice makes you more in demand because the
type of program you give will be more polished and stand out as a better
Quality then those five minute practice guys who are in a hurry to give music
but not intent on presentation and content of the message brought, some of
them do not know how to coordinate the song message to the message sermon
hour or the text that are given in the worship hour.
If you are doing minstrel work, the popular music would be what are the
college curriculum each semester the most
Page 122
concentrated works that season, in symphonies and in arias. While in church it
is always the message of the hour.
Maybe you are singing a particular doctrinal passage or message that must be
emphasized in that hour.
9.) Learn to read the music as well as the words and sing along, practicing as
much as you can to build your music program. Starting out, you should have
atleast 12 songs that you know well and after that maybe start collecting songs
so that you can build a recital program.
What.s a “Recital?”
This is a work of music “program” by one artist with an accompanist. A
“Concert” is the Musical artistry of instrumentalists and or voices working
together.
10.) The length of the program presented is important as well as the length of
the musical selection, that you personally select. The program usually consists
of about one hour of continuous music at length or in segments of single
songs. Or you may want to be in Concert or Cantatas or Oratorios(musical
works with not words spoken).
You might want to write a Bible drama and present it for some particular
audience.
Angels: Heb 1:14
11.) You have them in prayer petition to help you in all things concerning your
spiritual walk.
Ministering spirits, Guard and guide you to do good.
Page 123
The Holy Spirit tutors you in the scriptures and never gives bad advice or
orientation. If you are evil will you get a good report? The bible instructs us
how God deals with the intent of the heart and what motives lie behind our
actions. If you are purging the area of your faults and making amends in songs
and speeches, there should not be an alternate view expressed which would
say you are not really amending anything.
12.) You can consult the bible anytime for how to do things.
Songs of conviction, persuasion, the change of life, meeting first with Christ,
the sinner.s plea or prayer type of music, that convicts the listen to what has
been wrong and God is the difference.
Who will approve or disapprove, when your simple well planned program is
accepted by God.(“if God be for us, who can be against us…”Rom 8:31)
13.) Respect “Him,” and he will prove you well.
14.) Respect those who lead out and that help everyone, overall. If you are in a
habit of addressing Jesus the Master when you come into the sanctuary, others
may not know this is an immediate address to your prayer life, If they tag
along with you or commonly want to greet you, simply tell them that you need
moments to talk and pray to God before talking business of the service with
others. There also is the dilemma of talking about everything “shop”
which is other business that should not be in the sanctuary.
Page 124
When you get to school , what is accepted has already been set at church level
and you should do well if trained already in church.
What is stage deportment?
This is much to do with the way you enter and leave the place of performance
and during the music you prepared.
Walking on and off with confidence, head held steady, keeping steady vision
and walking in a calm manner, neither running or sluggishly.
Looking ahead just over the heads of the audience, or sitting at the instrument
glancing periodically at the top of the audience. Eye contact would be
transference of information, which might distract from what you are
presenting.
What is street singing?
(see “The minstrel. segment)
Street performances or street singing is a place of artist entrance and arena
with an outside public as the auditorium.
Parks and recreation
Out doors
Store fronts
Business fronts.
Church fronts.
Page 125
What should you know to do there or why would you consider that work?
This is an area of recital and concert work artistry too!
Many recital groups do malls and store fronts at Christmas time. They use the
same selected songs for Christmas music in church.
The street minstral or a missionary will set up their own area and perform for
the public who are always ready for artists in the area.
When Claudia was an “ Artist in residence” at The Lutheran Chruch, I was
offered singing gigs and my picture was put in the local news; “Star News”
This work included singing for the Senior Center in Pasadena.
At Vallejo Drive ,S.D.A. in Glendale, CA., While soloist in the choir for five
years. Claudia was selected for Civic Light Opera at Glendale Civic Music
Theatre for the role the Mother Abess in the”Sound of Music” production put
on at Glendale College, summer of 1980, the same year Claudia was
previledged to sing for the General Conference Session in Dallas, Tx. By the
invitation of the World Headquarters President John Hancock. Her brother
Shannon D. Goodwin also Sang, at General Conference that year.
At Oakwood College Claudia was selected to be Hostess of the Radio
broadcast “Opera Matinee”, introducing opera selections, to be aired on the
program, in 1984.
In Philadelphia, She was selected to sing for Mayors and Governors for the
banquet put on by Samuel Evans in
a Soirée of prestigious political persons, 1984.
Page 126
At the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, She was selected to
Write the fanfare for the American Negro College fund
Banquet. 1984.
Having been heard by world professionals because the teachers thought
Claudia has a good voice, She was also accepted for recital compliment by
opera Directors. But this was not her main goal, God guided her in preparation
for what could be a good career, all the while she had to practice and be
prepared for what might come to her as an opportunity to serve God in music.
This was many years after Claudia had done other things just mention:
Singing solos, Choir director, Lead singer and Doctoral recital soloist.
That my experience in Oratorio work was 12 consecutive years concurrent with
the other opportunities while i
Traveled to San Diego and Los Angeles, (all transpired before the 1991 John
Carter Report.)
What is a mentor?
This is a person you respect to teach or guide you in the area of your talents.
You might want to do some field study and get credit for it.
They might also offer a degree or decree in the area of study you wish to
pursue.
Why can.t I just ask God to give me the talent?
Page 127
You can ask God to give you the talent, but you must use it as it is given to you
and not spoil it be neglecting practice and make your grooming for your best
presentation.
Will I get paid for this work of street presentation?
You can call this real work.
Yes there is money given, and depending on how you present your self, this
free lance enterprise can earn a few dollars to put to good use.
I have not known anyone who makes a daily living, singing, because it is
terrifically hard on the voice to subject yourself to more than an hour of music
a day, outdoors and depending on the volume of songs , your voice, the
weather conditions, the people that show up, type of area, you sing or choose,
the average patrol of the community and other factors of emergency and
preparation, you should be able to map it out for yourself. However, if it is
“live” instrumental the factors change. Weather being significant in all cases.
What good is being a missionary if you are a singer, why not just do that?
You choose who you serve and you do as the Master shows you, if it is
furtherance in school, He will lead you, (see”Lord you talk to me..” {the song)
as long as you
Page 128
Co operate with God he will send you a mentor, or pastors or leaders to help
you, and in some cases you have to lead
out on your own or with others. Be aware of the central factor of leading out
while others superimpose their program over yours, if you are a novice it does
not make difficulties in program planning, if you are a professional, the
overlap of music presentations, styles and personalities differ and sometime
do not co operate with the general purpose of your presentation or the hour or
worship given.
The commission
Being led to do the work of the ministry is a calling from God. If you are a
good musician and you are looking, solely; to be leader in church music, then
use your time around those who can gear you for that role with the nominating
committee.
If you are hoping for a degree or decree, you have to let the Lord lead you into
the proper course with the right people and asking for the placement once you
have reached the stage of certain development.
Sometimes it is not up to others, it is up to you, but do not force others out of
the picture, nor prematurely invite them without the council of God first.
What makes you an expert on this?
Page 129
You have to learn to endure the exposure of your talents and that with years
and people observing you, can conclude what is best for you.
If you are totally ostracized, is it because what you are doing is totally
unacceptable, by terms of moral or physical evidence: There are no hard and
fast rules for
street artists and minstrels run in our family, we do not turn down and
opportunity to share our faith, though we may alter the entry to it, due to
circumstances of preparation or climate.
What is sharing your faith?
It means you share your experience in what you know of God, to others and
that by song or music presentation. You can also expand it to speech, the
question then is, will time and nerve to expand in positive directions be
observed?
What is positive about that exposure?
There is nothing negative about singing a song and cheering people up.
Attracting interest in the “arts” is an old exercise of getting acquainted with
others, when you expand it to “witnessing” for Christ, you can do a lot of good
and help others.
Why would you want to help others?
Page 130
If you are in government, helping others is a community concern. When you
belong to a fellowship, it has to do with soul winning; leading persons to
Jesus, feeding the poor, helping the disadvantaged and if you do not raise
funds, through your performance of music(singing and artistry), you can raise
funds though speech, and circulars. We Know them as “literature
evangelists”(this does not imply that the writer Claudia Humphrey, has
sponsors in literature evangelism)
Why help someone if you can.t help yourself?
Many missionaries start out poor, in fact some take a vow of poverty along
with fidelity and chastity.
It is not a sign that they cannot help. The talent to direct help to others is the
point.
To be able to connect community and service in creative influences, so that
good is done, and humanity benefits, is the point. Some go so fars as to get a
government status of 501 c 3 , to collect funds and do their work, but the author
does not suggest that is necessary.
So why not let the government do that and not involve musicians?
If we do not involve ourselves in goodwill to others, than we loose in our
expression of faith, towards Christ,(“HE” is to help where needed.) This is a

Responsibility:
If people use you or mock you because you have done good to help yourself
improve, or to help others, they are the ones at a loss and have no excuse for
battering
goodwill in action. For they add to the list of depression, violence, depravity,
suicide, homicide and other crimes. When now people look for vision and
hope that the world we live in can be a better place, will we reveal and
publish that and how and when we were born in to it.
The street ministry: “old town Pasadena” by Claudia Humphrey, started in
2001 has dwindled down to
Holiday programs, the point being that anyone can start a street ministry. But
the window closes to the harvest of one who for a time asked for people to join
her in closure of that harvest work on the corner of de lacey and Colorado in
the old town section, Pasadena California.
Thank you for allowing me to be of service,
My name is Claudia Humphrey, Missionary,
Known as a singing evangelist since 1991,

do and this is the way they turn out.
Her/ : You don’t care about me, where do i fit in this
grand scheme of yours to get things done?
Him/hero: I do care, dear, but I am not content, why with
all these interloping on my ideas and patents and
inventions i can’t get mY foot into the door and mingle
with the major league,
You know, if You’re to be mY ladY, i have to be able to
provide. (they come together, hold hands and gaze at
each other.)
134
Angel: singing:“…are You content to see trouble, are You
content to be
half of a whole, are you content to listen and not to
learn how your heart for the world continues to
Yearn…”
Savior: sings of himself ( he cannot deny himself)
Beautiful Jesus look at his stature. 2 Tim. 2:13
They do not hear, they have ears to hear but they do not
listen…” theY are dull with the cares of this world,
everything that is before them, they must have, and the
sacrificial life is scene as a person who has nothing to
offer, the sufferer for my sake is viewed as an outcast
and one that should not be delivered, I know they must
turn to me if they will be saved, I touch upon their lives
everyday, you can hear them pray, lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil, and yet look at the
results if they do not rest in the tie that binds them
and use every possible choice..
Protagonist: sinner
Lord you talk to me
These are the avenues (choir)
Antagonist(s) enters:
this spiritual tYpe, can’t get a job.
Look, they pray(smirking and laughins under his
breath)
135
Why do they think people would take an interest in
them? What have they to offer?
No money
No job
no…
Her?:
You have faith! That is what you have, love,
And you can exercise all manner of faith in everything
you do.
Him: yeah, Its perfectly legal (laughin)
Her: quit joking, you can become anything with
Your talents, God promises he will build on your gifts.
Him; i don’t have time to go to church that much, i have
to keep my nose to the grindstone.
Saviour: scene as a vision
he is mightY, he is powerful…

(Back to the she and the he)
…. are You that tempted
can’t You resist that must prove all to all people
Through the successes obtained,
whY can’t You let go of it and trust god
To take over this interprise
He:
Because God isn’t going to do the work
I am going to do it by the sweat of my brow...,
She: now see there, you go claiming some
Biblical text, just like that (she snaps her fingers)but
do you give God the
Glory for giving you that quick answer, what I am trying
to say is whY don’t You fit god in to Your grand schemes
and let him come out the winner?
Antagonist:
are You “he” the winner of the grand prize
Sweapstakes milleniaum? I have a letter here
For you that says you just got the highest score on
entries to the national patent office and they want you
to come and claim the prize.
Is your name_________ what is your size
Weight general description, national origin
Pedigree, gender, ma, pa, and siblings?
You see we need actual verifiable, irrefutable identity
of all entrants to the sweapstakes.
He: yes I am ___________ and(as he rattles off his identity
137
In the background can be heard petitioners
Signing petitions against graft and corruption.
Leader: yes this is what we have to do to beat that
measure that says , all winners of the national
sweapstakes get cart blanche to everything plus a
political office of state and national.
Child: i’m a child in jesus eYe that is what he wants me to
be….”
Sings entire song
Then stands facing the audience, saying
Usually they will believe a child, because we
don’t know a lot Yet, You see, we trust just about
everyone including our parents.
The truth be known though, trusting in Jesus is a good
teaching, i wonder when theY’ll send us
A good church worker to tell us more about God. I
believe in god… i just want to learn more so i can know
what to do with my life. (child turns and walks away)
Angel:”is not life more than meat, and the bodY.. more
than raiment and the soul that hath a need…”
Child kneels to pray
oh god , i am just a child, i need Your help…”
He: collects his winnings and moves from the area and no
one hears from him.
She: frustrated turns to other ways of dealing with
her problems, and mostly missing him,
She gathers unseemly friends.
(laughter in the background, of unsavory places to be)
Yeah, if You keep this up gal, You’ll be in the streets, a
gambler says to her.
138
(meanwhile “he” gets a fine job as backing agent for a
company selling mail order wares)
in “her” town (depicted ~pantomime)”…there was a man
who
had an eYe, that offended him…”
(unchanged bY the message of song, “she” turns
Back to what she was doing.)
As time goes by she cannot meet her expenses and her
employment fails her, she hopes she will hear from
“him” for he is the onlY one who knew her when things
were not so bad.
Choir: nurturing faith in Jesus
She: i was telling”him” about faith long long ago, ..
angel :now “she” finds that she is as guiltY as she
thought he was in exercising her faith, in god’s word
and promises, if she would just call upon
god, and recall his promises, saY and pronounce god’s
word:
The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man
availeth much…
If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive
us of our sins…
if with all Your heart You trulY seek me… Ye shall ever
surelY find me…
(angel: then sings…walking through the darkness
where no light could be seen, faced with anguished mind
and spirit suffering…)
139
Suddenly the scene show someone’s hands around the
throat of “him” accusing him of
defrauding the companY’s interest…
He had used a promotional that caused harm and danger
to the company employees and the promo had a song that
gave the advantage to
the competition.
“he” : I see what i did, but i couldn’t have meant it to
bring danger or harm or loss to the company
The song had every advantage of winning over our
losses.
Protagonist: yeah but you did not place a loving
interest in the whole idea and that is what is the harm,
there is no love in what You did and can’t You see that
this endangered everyone?, you polluted the whole
program we had to win our customers, you defile the
process and now we are at an all time loss, production is
down and
The whole face of the company has to be changed to save
assets. It is our duty to tell the world about our
product, we are here to serve…
We have to shower our patrons with hopes that our
product will not let them down.
Angel and choir:
Let love be in my songs.
Count it all joy
Here we are together
Antagonist:
People, people, people, how are you going to make a
buck. Do you always play right into the hands of the
constituent you call customer.
“he” i forgive You for saYing that
140
Antagonist: me?, what have I to be forgiven for
“he” You keep passing our carrots like we
are the horse drawn bY the carriage. You’re a sinner
just like anyone else and you have to recognize the same
savior and rise and take up your bed and walk away from
those filthy suggestions that we can lie cheat and
steal, but veil it with flowery words and pretty
commercials.
“he”: sings your sins are forgiven
Antagonist, my sins are forgiven, but you have not even
gotten to the jury yet, wait til the judge gets a hold of
You. You’ll grow up and see
This life of “goodY two shoes” is a racket
You’ll be ashamed…
“he” returns to his home and after the doors are closed
he retires to quietude saYing, but i’ll be walking into
glory, glory will shine walking into glory, singing all
the time…
I am gonna improve my ways, with the help of God I am
going to turn this commercial business around so that
no one in the company goes sour.
and i am gonna call on “her’ i know she has not changed
to this very day.
Antagonist: you better pay your bill before tomorrow
or we will repossess Your house…
“she”: oh please don’t do that, i am sure something will
happen before the two week deadline is up…please give
me the time to make up the difference, I will put in a
call to a few friends to help me out of this financial
bind.
141
please don’t give to me a sign of ridicule and cruelty, I
am really praying about this, I am changing my ways.
“she’ : Oh God, I really need your help{prays, In Jesus
Name
The choir sings:Matthew 11:28

staying in my flat and paying my bills. I do not know
what I am going to do, for in two weeks they are going to
take everything and repossess even my furniture.
You,”he” saYs” :You ? of all people, remember when You
lectured me about calling on God and all,(she nods) and
how is that turning out for you? , the truth is{he
pauses, I am not doing good in my business, and I am due to
come before a judge and jury soon.
He and she sing: so my life reflects
He first verse
She is the mirror, looking back at him.
Choir sings: by the grace of God one verse
Holiday is over
Back to the company grind
“he” finds he has sunk to a new low to get out
Of one problem he robbed to pay the other problem. The
court date is set.
“he” sings” come back to this back slidden heart.
Just as he finishes the police arrest him and he
Is taken in holding until the court date.
Saviour and angel sing as he continues in prayer:
Father I am your son,
You have identified me in signs in the sky.
You have anointed my understanding.
That is why I turn these dear sweet children over to
you, because of such deep love and sacrifice.
They can come and be healed and forgiven,
Restored and changed.

WHAT?
A PART OF THE FAMILY THAT one comes FROM TO UNDERSTAND WHY we STILL CALL ourselves A
NEGRO. IT IS NOT ALL ABOUT THE NEGRO SPIRITUAL BUT THAT PLAYS A MAJOR ROLL IN A LOT OF
WHAT WE HAVE DONE AS MUSICIANS. It has opened the door to many opportunities and lifted the load of
oppression through the use of the arts. Do you have the opportunity also to learn about the Negro American only to
learn that the state of oppression that has been a great difficulty is now washed into the rebellion that means we are
not called negro.
I would like to write that special trip I made from birth to nowis a calling card from the Lord himself and the trips
and tours on earth were just a plan that is greater then my ideals and my assumed path of needs and wants. Daddy
having to go into the town, the first laundromat that he ownedand operated and because he was negro there had
to be an opposition which meant there was soon to be competition. Then dad went into the city a half hour drive
every day in the 50.s and was a red cap for the local train station, most of them were negro and a half a dozen of
them were my uncles and grandfather.
That made dad a three job person because he ran the farm and with chickens,
and cows, the dogs also had to be fed and we did chores but dad was the head of it all.
He built a huge round room on the east side of the house that was to be the new living room.
I remember watching the caucus on the television and Adlai Stevenson was being considered a candidate for office.
By the time Eisenhower was President, we were all divorced living in the city, Portland, a divided home and that
house was on height street. I was now in the fourth grade and wewere taken to the Adventist school in Portland.
The church picture of dad was the holy hour for Sharon Church was a negro church.

Dad was a survivor!
•Dad moved to California, he had married for the second time and he and his wife were now cosmetologists.
My step brother and sister were a part of the family•The frustration of not sharing was diminshed by moving in with granddaddy and grandmother.
•So now the Henderson.s, and visiting cousins the Hay.s, and the Goodwin.s all had community with the
grandparent house. At the top of the hill 61ststreet between Glisan and Burnside.
•Anut, uncle, two brothers, mother, granddaddy, grandmother and me, in the house, but the relating was•Extended by many cultural and musical experiences with the hays.
•I walked everyday to the local Adventist school in Portland PUA,and attended there from fourth to eight
grade. Mr. Thorman was my teacher two years in a row, having decided to help the same class in its following
year. I was told if I did well scholastically I could make Valdictorian, and I determined to memorize
everything for the tests that would show readiness.
•I made class chaplain in the eight grade. The civil rights movements were not focused on by the•School teachings and at home we were strivers, so as not to notice or stand out, it is unusual that•The head of our house was a red cap and a shoe shine boy. That was Grandpa. He was a freedom idealist and
he set me free to play the piano one half hour before the news every day.
•This changed my life and focus to music permanently. I thank Godfor grandpa. Now I was able to make•Strides and eye level with my peers and at graduation I was the soloist for the Baccalaureate-Commencement,
singing the sermon “The Lord.s Prayer,”though I was not the sermon of the hour. I knew that God had•Something special for me. The whole FAMILY was there except Daddy!
•I later experienced the same feelings of being left out when I too was divorced and at distance with my own
children. Somehow daddy and I were to come together and heal those times.
Expectations•I thought people lived on and on. There were times when to come
together as family only meant I, Claudia, was to join with a sick
member of the family. While in academy when i could have lost myjob at the school laundry( a choice like dad, who cared about me),
•I went to see my sick mother, with the ultimatum of I might not have
a job when I came back, yet I had held down the laundry job to
defray the academy expenses which to that time were not met. Then
for a youngster from age 13 to 16 I worked summer and all year long
after classes. For 50cents and hour.
•The academy was co-educational, but no fraternizing•And if negro, there was me and my two brothers my Freshman year,
and my two female cousins, my Sophomore years, when, Brothers
and cousins were seniors, there would be no dating.
•I played the piano for worship in the girl’s dormitory and some in the
main auditorium worship.
•My brothers and I always sang trios. “The Goodwin kids”
